2011

  • I carefully sealed the vent line where it penetrates the fuel tank wall. A leak here would allow fuel to drain into the wing.
  • Both wings, at the end of the day.
  • A main landing gear strut. It is made of 3M S-Play, very tough.
  • Close-up of a gear main gear leg. Bede gets the legs pre-drilled because even carbide drill bits have a tough time with the S-Ply
  • Most of the S-Ply has the glass running in one direction but there are relatively thin outer layers with the glass grain at an angle to give the piece torsional strength.
  • Other landing gear parts
  • Long view of the left wing with all of the ribs bonded into place
  • The results of sniffing too much Pro Seal. Don't try this at home, kiddies.
  • Bending a gusset on the sheet metal brake
  • The results of my first sheet metal fabrication effort: a 2x2 piece of aluminum with a 90 degree angle. Impressive, eh?
  • Laying the inboard 4' skin section onto the right wing
  • Close up of the edge of the wing skin on top of the double ribs 8 & 9
  • Clamps holding the skin to the ribs. Used here so Rob could mark the trailing edge of the rear spar on the skin. They will be used later to hold the skin in place while the ProSeal cures.
  • Test fitting a fuel sender in the left wing.
  • Fuel sender with the top ground off so the fuel can flow freely through the tube.
  • Checking to assure that the top of the fuel sender will not touch the top wing skin.
  • Checking to assure that the top of the fuel sender will not touch the bottom wing skin.
  • Marking the reference line on the skin. This line is the trailing edge of the rear spar.
  • Measuring the distance from the reference line to the line on which the rivet holes will be drilled.
  • Drawing a 48" long straight line is a challenge for a guy who almost flunked out of kindergarten arts & crafts!
