My first job mostly complete: riveting the rear spar onto the ribs of the right wing.

2011

  • My first job mostly complete: riveting the rear spar onto the ribs of the right wing.

  • Close up of a couple of my first rivets. Hey, a guy's got to start somewhere!
  • My first rib on the left wing

  • The whole set of ribs for the left wing. Two are mostly solid. The rest have lightening holes in them.
  • The whole for the main spar is cut *exactly* to size by the machine. Unfortunately, the *inner* measurement of the tubular spar is exact while the outer measurement is not. Consequently, I need to enlarge the hole a bit to fit the irregularly shaped spar.
  • The fuselage is assembled and already "flying" near the shop ceiling.
  • More ribs going onto the left wing.
  • With all of the ribs on the left wing spar, we used a plumb bob to assure that the square bar was exactly in position.
  • More measuring
  • And more measuring
  • With the bar placed "perfectly," we got the ribs in approximately the right place, ready for the final adjustment and clamping.
  • At 4' and 8' from the fuselage, there are doubled ribs. These are the lines where there are seams in the wing skin so these doubled ribs need to be very precisely placed. The others are not so critical. You can see the clamps in this photo.
  • Close-up of a clamped, doubled rib.
  • A pneumatic gun is definitely the trick way to apply Pro Seal!
  • Pull the trigger and apply a neat bead, easier than caulking a bathtub.
  • No comments, please, about how well my hair color matches my shirt and the aluminum!
